gnimbley loses his mind (so, what's new?)

my friend gnimbley has a new website
it's a poetry site about iraq and war and stuff
we wants you to send him poems
    do it
or i will make you eat rubarb

"Why are we in Iraq?" That would seem to be the burning question of our time. Certainly, it gets to the root of the question: What is America's role in the world today?

"Why are we in Iraq?" To some people, the answer is obvious; to others, frustratingly obscure.

"Why are we in Iraq?" Some think the United States is in Iraq to do good; some think they are there to do evil. Some believe America has lost it's way; others believe that to question its leaders is to lose faith in freedom.

Is this, then, what has become of the American dream? And if so, do we rejoice? ...or grieve?

This is a call for poetry in response to the question: "Why are we in Iraq?" If you have something to say about Iraq and America, their peoples and their future, we invite you to submit your poems for publication on the website. Submission guidelines and the submission form can be found at:

    http://www.whyareweiniraq.com

All poems will be considered for publication, regardless of political point of view. The purpose of this site is to propagate discussion and expose readers to differing points of view. Poems will be judged on their artistic merit, and how
well they deal with the subject, not on political correctness.

We are looking for poetry. We don't want stories, memoirs, essays, letters, learned dissertations, reasoned arguments, sermons, rants or anything but poetry. We don't want to know what you think; we want to know how you feel.

    today is today

    people have been asking me
why aren't you posting your art work any more?

actually no body has asked me
it's just a device to start this entry
    okay?

the major problem is that my drawing instructor
    wants everything to be 18" x 24"

try fitting that into a scanner

    and when i take photos
they come out all brown and strange

so i haven't got good pictures of the drawings

i entered two works in the indianapolis art center's student show
    neither were accepted

one was my bunny print i posted earlier
i entered it because you can enter two works
    for the entry fee
and i needed a second work

    should have entered my barn

    Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

    yeah
    that's a wood cut print

anyway, the other work i entered
was a drawing of an african woman

i had more hopes for it getting in
but i am not good enough yet

    i do have it framed
hanging on the wall in my stairway
so sometime i will take a picture of it
    and post it here

    classes have started up again
and i am working on new art

i did a picture of ben kingsley
    that i don't like
    but my instructor likes

right now i am working on a picture of my brother-in-law
    with his cat

i have high hopes for that drawing

    and in print making
i am doing my first relief wood cuts

    both feature saxophone players

it will be a while before i post anything
    since these are multiple colors
and the print has to dry between colors
    so, later

    more portraits

    okay

my last entry showed a portrait i did in class two weeks ago

btw, all these pictures are reduced to 33%
    pictures are still dark
the bg is white drawing paper

i'm still working on better photos
i need to scan them but they are too big for the scanner

    anyway

    the teacher assigned us homework
do a portrait at home from a photo or a magazine picture

    here is what i did
some software guy from newsweek (i think)
    out of a magazine anyway

    Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

    okay
    well
    it's not great

took me an hour to get the first few lines
then a couple of more hours to get the rest of the lines
and then i did some shading

the teacher didn't like how dark i did the lines in the face
she thought the nose was too small and the mouth was off center

    c'est la vie

then in class last week he had to draw from a live model

first we did an exercise in chalk where we had to do the shadows only

mine ended up making her llok lioke a cat woman!

(no pictures of the chalk exercises
in order to get a better picture i took these outside and photographed them in sunlight
the chalk exercises were on newsprint
and they wouldn't stay in the wind
and i wasn't really interested in rigging something up to keep them still)

then we spend two and a half hours drawing in pencil

    this is lisa

    Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

her mouth doesn't stick out that far
but i really like the eye!

    her hair was amazingly full
    (and had just been straightened)
i sucked at doing her hair

but, all in all, not bad

    especially for a bunny
seeing as we don't have thumbs and all

    ha!

after that class our teacher assigned more homework

an portrait at home from a magazine photo

this is a east german (iirc) guy from national geographic

    Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

this is my most successful portrait to date
    i'm getting better, yes?

the teacher really liked the shading

she even showed it to a couple of people to show them about shading and tonal values

we had class last night and did another portrait of a live model
more homework and another live portrait next week
and then we are on to full figure drawing

this is enough pictures for tonight

i'll show you more next time

    portraits

    tuesday night is drawing class

    we are doing the book
drawing on the right side of the brain

i am not going to post the early exercise stuff

if you've read/done the book you know what that stuff is

    we are now into portraits

this first portrait is from a magazine photo that the teacher gave me
    it was done during class

the full size image linked to the thumbnail
is actually reduced 2/3 from the original

    Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

    note about picture quality
i had to photograph the drawing
since it is too big for the scanner

the picture came out with a dark brown tone
it is actually pencil on white drawing paper
i used the iphoto function "black and white" to get rid of the brown color
but there is still an overall dark cast to the drawing

i'll see if i can figure out a better way to take the picture later
so it is more like what it really looks like

    Woodcut Dragon

here is the first woodcut i made in class
    (it's actually my second woodcut
because i made one in a "sampler" class last spring)

    Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

the subject is a dragon figure from the smithsonian
(the full size image is 1/3 the actual size
the rabbit print i posted earlier is also 1/3 actual size)

i drew the image on paper
    and transfered it to pine

after i had the image on the wood
i realized that in order for the image to stand out
i would have to carve away a lot of wood surrounding it

i didn't want to do that much carving

    so
i decided to add the ying yang symbol
in order to reduce the amount of white space i had to carve

sort of an after thought to reduce work

    yes, the ink is red
i have done black, red and blue ink on white mulberry paper prints
i am going to do some orangish-yellow ink on dark blue paper prints as well

    then
if all goes according to plan
i am going to cut some of the prints up
    mix the colors up
and mount them behind a mat paper grid

we'll see if that works the way i envision

    probably not
but at least i will learn something

    bunny!

    relief wood cut
printed on newsprint with black ink
    this is the test print
i did one good one on mulberry paper
and have to get some more paper for the rest of my prints
i am thinking a white paper with green fibers
and then mix up an orangy brown ink

    today

    hi

    haven't been posting
    but will start again soon

too sunny and fun out to be inside
    pawing at the computer

i started a new class last night
    wood cut print making

we cut up blocks of wood
    put ink on them
and then transfer the image to paper

then in a couple of weeks
    i start a drawing class

so i will have lots of stuff to put up then

    and later
when I get some wood cuts done
i will start making paper again
so i can print on the paper

    wheeeeee!!!!!!!!!

    first
i have to get the tools
    and the paper
    and stuff
    to make the prints
    then next week
    we start making prints

    meanwhile have fun
    toodles!

    wow
it's been a long time since i posted, huh?

well, i've been busy on other stuff

gnimbley was working on his play
    finally finished it
and he's putting up his own web site

it should be up this weekend

just the play and a few other things at first
i'll give you a link when it's available

    and guess what?
he's going to put up all my bedtime stories
    yay!

here's the artsy fartsy thing for today
my other attempt at andy goldsworthy paper

    Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

I first made the blue sheet using the modeling clay
    let it dry completely
and then i dipped the mold
in the vat of yellow paper
hoping to fill in the holes that way
but the blue paper went soft
    much too quickly
and i ended up with what you see above

    oh well
i still have two more ideas
    one of them will work
    guaranteed

    oh yeah
i signed up for two more art clasees this fall
    a drawing class
with a lady who is supposed to be a really good teacher
and a class in wood cut block printing
    so this fall
i should be posting lots of stuff here

    now back to bothering gnimbley
as he works on the web site

    andy goldsworthy paper

as i said once or so here
i am trying to make paper
and one thing i was trying to make
    was andy goldsworthy paper

    who is andy goldsworthy?
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Goldsworthy

    I saw the movie
    rivers and tides
    and he uses a spiral
in a lot of his work
kind of a signature thing for him

    anyway
i thought it would be cool to merge
    two types of paper together
    and decided
    as an homage to andy
    to experiment
by trying to create a sheet of paper
    of one color
    with an andy goldsworthy spiral
    of a different color

    so far
    complete failure

    well, not total failure
    i have tried two ways
    neither worked

    i have two other ideas
    that i will try later
maybe one of them will work

    anyway
the first idea was to make a spiral of modeling clay
and place that on the mold
and then draw the fibers from the vat
with the clay on the mold
so i get a spiral shaped hole in the paper

    so far so good
    that worked fine

    i removed the clay
and then tried to fill the resulting hole
with a different color paper pulp

first i used a turkey baster
    to squeeze out the pulp
    into the spiral
but the pressure of the water
    pushed the other paper around
and the second color ran all over the place

then i tried using a spoon
    similar problem

then i tried picking the pulp out with my hands
    and squeezing out the water
and placing it in the spiral

    that kinda worked
but the nice sharp edges left over from the clay
    were gone
and i kind of had a mooshy spiral

    see?

the sloppy part at the bottom
is where i tried to use
    the turkey baster

    anyway
i will post attempt number two
some day when i feel like posting
    and then my next attempts
    when they are done

i am not going to make more than just these
    andy goldsworthy papers
    this is just to experiment

i plan to make bunny paper
    natch'
once i get the technique down

or maybe i will murder lmno
    again
